Learning to perform a thyroid self-examination is a simple yet empowering step in taking charge of your thyroid health. This at-home practice can help detect potential issues like Graves’ disease, thyroid nodules, or even thyroid cancer in their early stages. While it’s an excellent tool for identifying obvious abnormalities, it may not detect deeper issues. If you suspect a thyroid problem, consult a medical professional and get your hormone levels tested. I’m here to support you on this journey.
My Story: From Fear to Empowerment
If you feel a lump, swelling, or nodules in your thyroid area, don’t panic. These symptoms don’t necessarily mean you have thyroid cancer or a serious disorder. When I first noticed lumps in my neck, I was overwhelmed with fear, immediately fearing the worst. As I share in my book, Healing Through Nature’s Medicine, A Story of Hope, my journey began with a visit to my doctor, followed by blood tests and a sonogram. The results showed six nodules, one the size of a lemon, and a heterogeneous mass on my thyroid. My thyroid levels were also abnormal.
This experience led me to choose a natural approach to healing my thyroid, which I detail in my book. If you're facing similar concerns, know that there are non-invasive, natural options available to you.
Understanding Thyroid Nodules
Some clients I’ve worked with were told their nodules were "pre-cancerous." Let me emphasize the key word here: PRE. This does not mean cancer. It means there is still time to address the issue with natural methods that can shrink nodules and restore thyroid health without surgery or radioactive iodine ablation. These invasive treatments often lead to further health complications because the thyroid plays a critical role in the body, including:
Regulating metabolism and energy levels
Supporting brain function and mental health
Balancing hormones
Managing body temperature
Strengthening the immune system
Contributing to heart health
Removing or destroying the thyroid gland can lead to lifelong dependency on medications and a cascade of other health challenges. Before making such a permanent decision, consider trying a natural approach.
How to Perform a Thyroid Self-Exam
Follow these simple steps to examine your thyroid at home:
Use a Mirror: Stand in front of a mirror and focus on the lower-front portion of your neck, removing any obstructions like scarves or jewelry.
Tilt Your Head Back: Slightly extend your chin towards the ceiling while ensuring you can still see your neck in the mirror.
Locate the Thyroid: Place your finger at the tip of your chin, sliding it down the midline to locate your Adam’s apple. Below this is the cricoid cartilage, followed by the first two rings of the trachea, where the thyroid gland rests.
Take a Sip of Water: With your head tilted back, swallow a sip of water and observe the motion of your neck.
Check for Lumps: Look for any lumps, irregularities, or protrusions as you swallow. Nodules may appear as round lumps that move with the gland, while goiters may cause a visible swelling.
Feel the Area: Gently palpate the area around your thyroid to detect any enlargements or abnormalities.
Repeat Regularly: Perform this self-exam every few months to monitor for changes.
What to Do If You Detect Abnormalities
If you notice lumps, swelling, or other irregularities, consult your doctor for further evaluation. Should nodules be detected, explore natural healing approaches before considering invasive treatments. Remember, once your thyroid is removed or destroyed, you cannot undo this choice. Natural remedies, guided by a professional, may provide a path to healing without compromising your overall health.
